yesterday it was the eurovision song contest.

I went into a newspapers internett site (dagbladet if anyone is interested) and saw they had a forum for discussing the results (the results where coming in at the time). much of the forum was covered with the comments of two people, both trolls, one in norwegian and one in english. they where claiming that norway lost because we sent an immigrant to the finals (the guy was born in Iran but came to norway when he was just over 1 yrs old), and other things a troll would say to get everyone pissed. so i logged in and wrote a comment "wow look, a racist troll, how original". then the trolls became guiet for a while. i looked down the pages and saw what other people had been writing to the trolls, and it looks like they had been trying to bully them, many comments was very aggressive, sending threats to the trolls and telling them to fuck off.

So the thing is that the trolls really got everything they wanted on this forum, it was a big forum, badly moderated, and they got normal people who was on the internett to rage on them.

I would like some input on how to deal with such trolls, are there different kind of trolls?

any reading material you could add would be great

The moment you let a troll get under your skin and you react with anger or similar - then they are getting exactly what they want.

So anything BUT getting angry or pissed off with them works a lot better.

Sarcasm can work well. Like commenting on their sweet disposition. Or thanking them profusely for their well thought out and considerate viewpoint.

when i looked down on the page i saw someone was trying to discuss their view on immigrants in a calm and intellectual way, that didn`t work out. so then he responded with rage afterwards.

i found an article about how to deal with trolls http://www.teamtechnology.co.uk/troll-tactics.html

But i would much more like to know more about why they are doing this, to go a bit deeper than saying trolls are attention seekers

Yes well, you could speculate forever as to the why.  But how will you ever know the real truth - unless you get some actual trolls to fess up. I am guessing honesty is not their strongest suit.

I would also suggest that most of them probably don't even know why they do it. Often I think it is a power thing - gives them a sense of power or an ego boost to feel that they are manipulating people or gettong them to react.  But there are probably many reasons.

i liked this blog http://networkbloggingtips.com/dealing-with-trolls-and-negativity/ especially the part about about fighting off the troll with dwarfs

Yes that's similar to the usual advice one might see.  And most of it is good advice. The only problem I have is with the "ignoring". Good in theory but in practice not always that easy - especially with the more persistent trolls.  But for anyone that can successfully ignore I applaud them.

Im a troll myself and all your ideas to beat us is futile. It will not work. The truth is most of us turn to stone when exposed to sunlight. The stronger ones like myself have almost no weakeness. And the few things that can beat us I will not reveal to you!

great to hear, but the last time i met a troll it was a a regular racist-troll, just flingin shit around, hoping someone would get mad, it was very obvious, but since it was on the forum of a newspaper that is mainly visited by normal human beings who have probably never heard about a troll, he/she succeded in getting someone annoyd, and then getting them acting crazy

you don`t need a spray, you need this cat

I got my first troll on my last youtube video (on the front page of ipower :D) and I have no idea what the point was to their comment but it was obvious trolling xD So far, I just saw it as "wow, someone was that bothered about something I did that they felt the need to attack me. I had that much of an effect on someone! :O"

I've just left it there so far and I dunno, I might reply something like "thanks for commenting bro! Really helps the metrics out! Sorry about the late reply, I've been working on more videos so if you can subscribe you can watch and comment on them soon too!"

i saw that troll, it`s so obvious it could just stand

Rule number one to maintain your sanity on the internet: don't read random forums.

I Power is one in a million, there are very few forums that aren't filled with trolls and kids, Youtube comments are the same thing, there is no point in reading them.
