Scientific Research & Self-Development Activism
Yeah, the latest news (as of today) is that the U.S. Congress has temporarily benched SOPA. You can read about it in this Wired article here. And while that is good, I accidentally came across a web site today that was shut-down by the Dept. of Homeland Security for copyright violations! Yeah, you heard me right. Shut Down. They seized the site's domain and it now displays this picture for a few seconds before re-directing you to a video about online piracy:
.
A few things about this disturb the hell out of me. #1 - The website was only a movie "link-site" that provided links to other sites that actually hosted the uploaded shows and movies. It didn't host any of the files itself - it simply provided the service of linking you to other places on the web where you could find them. That used to be OK; but apparently not anymore. And #2 - What in the holy fuck does Homeland Security have to do with any of this!? This kind of thing is not "security" related. It has nothing to do with terrorism or national security at all. This shit is starting to remind me quite a bit of the Nazi Police State!!! grrrrr

January 2012 Update: SOPA & PIPA both shelved indefinitely in response to the internet "blackout" on January 18th... but a new bill which is very similar and which will be called OPEN was quietly introduced in their place. Details about this new bill will be posted in another thread.

Permalink Reply by The Shiznit on December 17, 2011 at 9:02pm Originally postponed until next year, the House Judiciary Committee has quietly rescheduled the next SOPA hearing for the 21st, which is Wednesday next week! And it is expected to pass! The Committee Chairman, Lamar Smith, was quoted by TechCrunch as saying this about it:
"I am pleased that the unfounded claims of critics of the Stop Online Piracy Act have overwhelmingly been rejected by a majority of House Judiciary Committee members. The criticism of this bill is completely hypothetical; none of it is based in reality. Not one of the critics was able to point to any language in the bill that would in any way harm the Internet. Their accusations are simply not supported by any facts."
Which is, of course, utter bullshit!!!

Permalink Reply by Oliver Williams on December 20, 2011 at 2:30am that video was bullshit!! it was so staged its not even funny. The young ethnic woman, and a suit walk up to a hip white man giving away movies. The white suit takes 3 movies and the woman takes none. this was done to get the young suit hating demographic on the side of the people who are suffering from piracy.... the irony is that the people suffering from piracy are the wealthy film makers and artists.
A lil ass backwards if ya ask me. Its a subliminal message that I hope people are able to sniff out.

Permalink Reply by Stone Cold Shifty on January 20, 2012 at 12:12am Even as the fight against SOPA is going strong, the feds are still causing damage, having just shut down popular file-sharing website, Megaupload, and arresting four people, including its founder.

Anonymous has already retaliated by DDOS attacking a number of websites, including that of the Department of Justice.
Permalink Reply by Kokomo on January 20, 2012 at 4:31am wait what about people who paid good money to get lifetime membership on megaupload website?
Permalink Reply by The Shiznit on January 20, 2012 at 1:40pm @Kokomo - they're fucked!
It's a shame that the DDOS attacks are only able to have temporary effects on the sites attacked. Anonymous is going to have to step up its game and become more like Wikileaks if they ever hope to be taken seriously by these politicians and government agencies.
Brown [an unofficial Anonymous spokesman] adds that “more is coming” and Anonymous-aligned hacktivists are pursuing a joint effort with others to “damage campaign raising abilities of remaining Democrats who support SOPA.”
Although many members of Congress have just this week changed their stance on the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA, the raid on Megaupload proved that the feds don’t need SOPA or its sister legislation, PIPA, in order to pose a threat to the Web.

If the feds can have an accused pirate arrested and brought to this country for trial, why do we need SOPA and PIPA? I'll update as soon as I get that answered.
Update 2:05 p.m. PT - Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt) and the man who drafted PIPA, released a statement:
"Today's action by the Department of Justice against the leaders of MegaUpload.com shows what law enforcement can do to protect American intellectual property that is stolen through domestic websites."
Domestic?
DotCom was arrested in New Zealand and is a German national. His servers have long been rumored to be in Hong Kong. According to Leahy's office, Megaupload's servers are located in Virginia. Apparently that gives U.S. officials jurisdiction!
