Scientific Research & Self-Development Activism
Yeah, the latest news (as of today) is that the U.S. Congress has temporarily benched SOPA. You can read about it in this Wired article here. And while that is good, I accidentally came across a web site today that was shut-down by the Dept. of Homeland Security for copyright violations! Yeah, you heard me right. Shut Down. They seized the site's domain and it now displays this picture for a few seconds before re-directing you to a video about online piracy:
.
A few things about this disturb the hell out of me. #1 - The website was only a movie "link-site" that provided links to other sites that actually hosted the uploaded shows and movies. It didn't host any of the files itself - it simply provided the service of linking you to other places on the web where you could find them. That used to be OK; but apparently not anymore. And #2 - What in the holy fuck does Homeland Security have to do with any of this!? This kind of thing is not "security" related. It has nothing to do with terrorism or national security at all. This shit is starting to remind me quite a bit of the Nazi Police State!!! grrrrr

December 21st Update: SOPA hearings have been postponed again until an undisclosed time next year; and several activism-posts on Reddit call for a boycott of movie theaters this weekend to demonstrate opposition to to the bill.

January 2012 Update: SOPA & PIPA both shelved indefinitely in response to the internet "blackout" on January 18th... but a new bill which is very similar and which will be called OPEN was quietly introduced in their place. Details about this new bill will be posted in another thread.

Permalink Reply by The Shiznit on January 21, 2012 at 2:20am Yeah. SOPA & PIPA have both apparently been shelved "indefinitely" because of the protests on the 18th; but they were not retracted, or killed. And there is another bill that was very quietly introduced on the 18th in both the House and the Senate which is very similar to SOPA & PIPA, which will be referred to in the future as OPEN, for "the Online Protection & Enforcement of Digital Trade Act". Its supporters say that it's not as severe as SOPA & PIPA but will still give the big Media dogs what they want while still safe-guarding the freedoms of the average internet user. And if you believe that is possible, then I have some swampland in Florida that I'd like to talk to you about. :-D

Permalink Reply by The Shiznit on February 23, 2012 at 1:03pm Update: Megaupload's Kim Dotcom granted bail in New Zealand
Highlights from the article:
"Megaupload boss Kim Dotcom was freed on bail in a surprise move, after a New Zealand judge dismissed fears the internet tycoon would flee the country to escape U.S. online piracy charges."
"The bail decision is a setback for U.S. authorities, who are seeking to extradite Dotcom and three others arrested in the January 20 raid. Two previous bail hearings had accepted the prosecution's case that the Internet millionaire was an "extreme flight risk" because he had the wealth and possible criminal connections to slip out of the country if he wanted. But Judge Nevin Dawson said the danger of Dotcom fleeing had diminished because all his funds had been seized and investigators had not uncovered any new bank accounts or assets in his name since his arrest."
"The judge granted Dotcom bail but barred him from accessing the Internet and helicopter flights, ordering him to stay in his Auckland property unless there was a medical emergency."
"A U.S. application for Dotcom's extradition is expected to be heard on August 20. U.S. authorities have said that they will seek the maximum penalty of 20 years in jail if he is brought before a U.S. court."
"Since his arrest, there has been a steady stream of media revelations about his extravagant lifestyle, including claims his mansion had a swimming pool filled with imported spring water and gold toilet roll holders. The portly millionaire also reportedly had a butler in his mansion whose duties included retrieving stray ping pong balls when Dotcom was playing table tennis."
"A documentary uploaded online shows Dotcom, surrounded by topless women, spraying champagne on board a super-yacht during a "crazy weekend" in Monaco that reportedly cost $10 million."
