Scientific Research & Self-Development Activism
Hey guys,
I probably have a reputation for moaning but it's all with good intentions I promise.
Here are some suggestions I have to improve the site, bring a greater sense of community to the site and help the site eventually become some sort of power on the web.
I Power Events
I've suggested this before but it never really got past the idea stage.
Basically this involves there being a date, time and topic being posted on the front page of the site. At this time ipower members are encouraged to come online and chat about the posted topic. At the end of the discussion someone can summarise the results of the discussion in a forum post so it can be discussed further. Topics can be repeated if they remain popular on the forum and this hopefully encourages regular site activity as well as progress towards solutions if problems are discussed.
I Power Gaming Clans
A lot of people are here because of Athene's videos, and probably got to them because they play videogames. I suggest as a team building and fun exercise that will improve sense of community, gaming clans on ipower. For example I play MW3 on PS3, BF3 on PC, MineCraft, TF2...
I Power Site Boosts
A la AtheneLive, we all go on to a website that deserves recognition, sign up or w/e (assuming it's free or really really cheap) and share it everywhere we can and try and get the site known a bit more.
I Power Support Groups
Not like traditional support groups... Imagine support groups where one person has a goal and everyone else in the group has already achieved it and helped the one person achieve their goal. Only one person with that goal can be focussed on at a time and if need be someone else can join that group and then the person who had that goal originally can become a helper. The helpers could be people who have achieved the goal with the help of people in the group from the beginning or someone with relevant experience or education or have achieved the goal somehow.
I Power Causes
How about each month i Power had the aim to raise a certain amount of money for a certain charity. This may not necessarily mean donating either but just promoting the charity and the site in order to get others to donate. This would be really easy to thanks to sites like justgiving and paypal. We'd simply need to set up a new page each month (or however long) and then promote it through whatever ways we can. This also helps with ipower being about SDA and changing the world. We can help each other learn the best ways to promote a site and best ways to help the world.
Those are just a few I could think of right now but I might sleep on it and make some more :)
I really really want this site to do well because the ideas behind it mean so much to me and make so much sense to me.
Thanks for reading and discuss the ideas below please :D I would love to see something here come to fruition :)

Permalink Reply by Adam on February 10, 2012 at 2:47pm I really like the concept of a discussion based event, that seems like a great way to get people talking. Would take a great deal of organisation, probably a fair bit of pettyness over the topic etc, but if it were achievable without too much hassle then fair doos, nice idea.
The idea of gaming 'clans' might kind of move away from the main functions/aims of the site. Many of the members already play those games together. Fair enough e.g. a LoL event or something once and a while wouldnt hurt. Only slight issue might be the diversity of time zones, servers etc people already play on.
I think the idea of support groups like that is a bit unfeasable for pretty obvious reasons. We can support each other but trying to target it that individually focused all the time is a bit too idealist for a site that mainly has e.g. 15 people online at one time, from diverse backgrounds of knowledge etc. Sure, kick up a post about what you want to do and take suggestions and help, but direct support of one person alone from a group of people seems a little far-fetched.
The idea of an I-power site boost or causes is a fairly good one but i dont think we have that collective power of e.g. Chiren with 500,000+ subscribers, but hey every little helps so might not be a bad idea to have like a 'charity of the month' where we vote on some sort of charity every1 believes in, and feature them on a post or w/e. Same perhaps for an up-and coming website we feel deserves attention. Why not, eh?
Sorry if some of what i said comes across pessimistic, just being realistic. Good post though, keep thinking ;)

I do understand the site boosting not being great but even our tiny community would give a boost to a small site in my opinion, just something to keep them going until they get a good fanbase, a little free promotion ;P
Also with the charity thing, I think my idea of setting targets might have been understood. The target could be met without any ipower member donating, just by promoting it freely and hoping people from anywhere donate :)
Permalink Reply by Michael V. on February 10, 2012 at 5:57pm The site boost idea is nice but impossible.. I power doesn't have a huge following base of users ..
All the other ideas are nice . i ./AGREE
Permalink Reply by SparTom007 - Tom on February 12, 2012 at 10:17am Yeah I guess :P but it is a nice idea xD Maybe one day we will have a large enough community :)
Thanks man, let's hope they go through :P
Permalink Reply by Jaguarin on February 13, 2012 at 7:36pm So, when do we start with discussions appointments??? :)
Permalink Reply by Kokomo on February 13, 2012 at 8:42pm Ipower Webcam, Voice, and Regular Chat rooms
Instead of having 1 chat room the whole website becomes a chat room. We can have a few main chat rooms and then chat rooms created by users. Each chat room will have a moderator who can ban trolls. Basically people will be able to message each other in real time. They can also have the option of chatting privately with someone with webcam and voice, and of course these private conversations would be kept private, but the chat log in the general chat would be recorded.
There could be main chat rooms related to Gaming, Fitness, Politics, Activism, News, and just a general chat. There should continue to be membership, because anonymous users will likely be Troll and be bullies.
I don't even check my profile, nor do I look at groups discussions, or forums that much. All my focus is on chat rooms where conversation is happening in real time. Maybe have it so that people who are inactive for 30 minutes in chat are just logged out. This idea sounds pretty good to me because I notice the most activity is on Ipower chat.
