Scientific Research & Self-Development Activism
Hi guys.
During one of many discussions about abortion ive noticed that in my point of view the life of a human being begins with creation of zygote, and that is very "catholic like" which is pretty werid considering I am an agnostic/atheist. I'd like to know what is your opinion about it, is there even a boundary to when does the human life begin?
Cheers :)

Some things are sure. I mean, we can pretty much all agree that we are "alive"... which is to say that we are living beings, and that the condition of being "alive" is a very substantial aspect of our conscious awareness. Even those who believe that our consciousness {or soul} will survive the grave would have to agree that this "soul" was therefore "alive" - which is why we all commonly refer to such an event as "life after death." Where things start to get confusing is when we start to ask ourselves what life actually is? Questions like, "When does life really begin?" and "What makes our hearts beat?" and "When does a baby in the womb become consciously self-aware?"
.
One aspect of all of this that I have personally been pondering about for quite a while now involves the idea that "I" am a lot more than simply the sum of my physical parts. Which is to say, for example, that I do not need my legs or my hands to be "Me." Although I am pretty sure that I do need my liver and my brain. lol But anyway, the idea is that while "I" obviously consist of a collection of organized, living cells, which all work together in harmony for the purpose of sustaining both their own individual well-being as well as the collective well-being of my body as a whole... the question that intrigues me so much is, "Where does this organized cooperation begin? and where does it end?" In other words, the individual cells in my body do cooperate with each other, to be sure... but what causes them do so? Does this concept of organized cooperation for mutual benefit begin at a chemical level? At an atomic level? A sub-atomic level? And since we as human beings obviously cooperate with both each other, as well as with "nature" {or our environments} in order to survive and to thrive... Where does this concept of cooperation for mutual benefit end? Does it end at the level of local ecosystems? At a global level? Or does it continue and exist as a Cosmic phenomena?

Permalink Reply by Lithoniel Rain on April 9, 2012 at 8:41pm I would say that human life begins at birth. However, concerning abortion I'd say third trimester is definitely too late to abort..plus they had 6 months to do it already so might as well just go through with it. I suppose I would give more emphasis on lung development and if the baby would be able to breathe on its own.
Permalink Reply by Tommy on April 9, 2012 at 11:22pm To answer this we would need a consistent logical definition of life..and there isnt such a thing yet imo
i agree with u that the creation of life starts with zygote so starting from that point of view abortion would be a dont do ever!
but when do we call this life human?
It doesnt have feelings or whatsoever its just assembling at the point.
beeing against abortion at this stage is a bit ridicilous imo cos its just some blurry cells doin there mindless things to become eventually a human beeing so if some1 would come to me and say there against aborting at the zygote stage or near that stage i say ok well call the cops and arrest us all cos we all would be mass murderers and most bedsheets would be mass graves with millions and millions lives that were ended (lol)
for me personally human life begins when the embryo makes its first muscle constraction and by doing so creates its lungs.
for abortion the question shouldnt be when does life starts but when do we think that life is valuable enough for us to think its no longer ehtisch to end it.
Permalink Reply by Richard Lennox on April 10, 2012 at 8:30pm Zygote is both male and female reproductive cells conected together so there arent any on your bedsheets nor you kill them massively (at least i hope so -.-) In my opinion making up strict borders when life is "worth" preserving and when not is pretty much just making an excuse for abortion to be less controversial.
Permalink Reply by Tommy on April 10, 2012 at 11:02pm I know, i wasnt referring to zygote in a bedsheet ;)
its just..why would we see a diploid cel as life worth preserving and a haploid cel..wich most bedsheets are full with;)..for example, not..
at least thats what i would wonder if some1 argumented to me we could never do abortion for example cos of human life begins with zygote.
Imo it shouldnt be controversial in the first place.
eventually itl become an nessasaty anyway i think , so might aswell all agree on a set border of from wich stage"human" life is worth preserving.
