Scientific Research & Self-Development Activism
In an unprecedented move which will be worthy of the history books, several major internet companies (and several hundred smaller ones) have coordinated an internet strike and have all agreed to shut down their websites on the 18th of January 2012 in protest of the SOPA & PIPA legislations now pending in the United States Congress. The idea for this "internet blackout" originated with the group known as Anonymous, and was originally rumored to include such internet giants as Google, Facebook, and Twitter. And while it now looks as if a few of those particular companies will not be participating in tomorrow's strike, some of them will be - and the original list of rumored participants has grown! Confirmations are still coming in but some of the major players who have already publicly committed to the blackout include Reddit, Wikipedia, Mozilla, Boing Boing, Imgur, Tucows, Greenpeace, and the Minecraft game servers. Google & Twitter will not be shutting down, but plan to highlight and support the strike by other means.
.
There was some discussion amongst the Admins of this site last week about whether or not I-Power and AtheneLive should participate in the blackout, but we believe that we can serve the cause better by playing a supportive and informative role, much as Google & Twitter plan to do. Members can discuss the blackout here and on AtheneLive; and Athene will be streaming and talking about the event all day, encouraging viewers to both contact their political Representatives and to show their praise and support to the companies who have decided to shut themselves down by thanking them with Tweets and emails. You can also voice your support by commenting on this thread, and listing some of the sites that you encountered who are participating in the blackout and telling us how the rest of us can contact them to send them a Thank You message. ;-)

(Yes, it's german.)
To everyone out there, owning a website: Do your part! You don't want your future children to ask you: "Daddy, what did you do in the great war against censorship?" And answer: "Nothing, my dear. I was a lazy idiot that did not realize how important it would have been to save free information and net neutrality."
;P
Permalink Reply by The Shiznit on January 18, 2012 at 10:56am 4chan seems to have joined the Strike / Blackout. Kinda. I figured they might do something.
People can still post and browse their site's forums, but all comment texts are being black-barred as if censored; and they are referring people to SOPA Strike.com
{You can still read the black-barred comments though if you mouse-over them.}
