I am not a scientist and I do not know much about physics. This might be more of a philopsofical discussion.

Before the big bang, many theories claim that time did not excist. Time as we know it is the fourth dimension we know here on earth. We cannot move in time like the other dimensions, not yet atleast, because we cannot cross the speed of light. I saw a documentary on discovery with Stephen Hawkings theories on time, where he claimed that time travel was possible and happens all the time (unfortunately part 1 has been removed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykQZAgJJnSI). Extremely small wormholes are around us all the time, and if we could make these bigger and travel through them, then we would indeed travel in time. This can also be used to reach planets faster then normal. We just don't have the tecnology yet.

This leads me to the questions, what was there before the big bang theory? Did time excist?

You can only take a guess on this questions, since even the most talented scientists have not answered this yet ;b

Personally, I won't try to answer the question, because it's one of those things that we may never really figure out.  I just thought I'd offer the comment regarding the "Big Bang" that, although {according to wikipdia} - "The Big Bang model or theory is the prevailing cosmological theory of the early development of the universe... it is still just a theory, and a hard one to actually prove, at that.  There are other theories about the cosmos, and this one does have some problems that are, as yet, unanswerable.  ;-)

sorry for not answering seriously, have a relevant comic strip to drop in though ^^ an interesting take on the question raised

>>Voila

LOL. Pretty good strip actually.

Well most new research ( at least which I know of ) is trying to move away from the big bang theory as it has several big flaws.

So instead of asking yourself what was before the big bang, ask yourself what happened instead of it :D

There are many good new theories, but I'm not really that competent to write about them, so do some research :)

well, since time is closely connected with mass.

time could not have existed b4 big bang or at least it would run very very slow.

however big bang is just a theory and I think it's more important to focus on ourselves and our surroundings first.

I like the approach that scientists have about The Big Bang not being so much the beginning. Instead, it describes how the universe evolved. If we tie in other theories as well, such as parallel and multiple universes, we can assume that perhaps our universe could be the youngest. out of... who knows. The idea/theory of how many other universes there may be, may be as astronomical as the number of stars in our own dimension.

This discovery is one of the main reasons why I'd enjoy living forever. Or being able to fly a TARDIS.

As far as space, matter, and time are concerned. I really rather enjoy the explanation given in ATEO.

uhh well first you must define what time is, when you do define it you ll get your answer.
What's even more interesting imo is WHY many theories say time didn't exist before it. It's not because of some simple rationalization along the lines of "hey if nothing existed before it, then, in a sense, time didn't exist". It's deeper than that. It's because relativity is fundamentally fuckin' CRAZY AWESOME and space and time are literally the same fabric. Start thinking and reading up on that and it becomes a real mindfuck. Basically: every point in space is a different point in time. Even 'simultaneity' is relative: let two persons drop a glass at the exact same time and there will be a point in space from which person A dropped his first and there'll be another point in space from which person B dropped his first. Relativity describes a fundamental 'lag' time that is inherent to 'reality' as we know it and if you go back to before the big bang when there was no universe yet, time literally can not exist yet at that point according to most models. HOW FRIGGIN AMAZING IS THAT SHIT?!
It is a philosophical question because physical rules (physics) don't apply. Any sequence or oscillation can represent time. If something caused the big bang, then time certainly existed before. Physicists will say that asking what is "before" doesn't make any sense, but that's because they hold the assumption that nothing exists outside of the Universe. Also "time" may not exist formally if there are no observers. If you don't know anything about quantum mechanics then that last part probably doesn't make any sense.
that's not really true, physicists ARE trying to figure out what happened b4. and the laws of physical rules do apply since these are the rules that form our universe
Actually, the exact conditions of the big bang brought about our laws of physics. Change how the big bang happened just a tiny bit and you get completely different physics. Of course, if you assume there was something before the big bang, then the big bang itself depended on certain rules of physics before it, but that's atm very hypothetical.

I don't have much time to contribute to the topic, but there is scientific evidence that there was time before big bang, and that the amount of energy liberated came from another space, which itself came from another space (you can put whatever you want to the word "space"). moreover, A big-bang can be considered as the death of a space, creating a new one by recycling itself through a certain amount of energy.

Catch you guys later on the subject!

dealing with trolls

yesterday it was the eurovision song contest.I went into a newspapers internett site (dagbladet if anyone is interested) and saw they had a forum for discussing the results (the results where coming in at the time). much of the forum was covered with the comments of two people, both trolls, one in norwegian and one in english. they where claiming that norway lost because we sent an immigrant to the finals (the guy was born in Iran but came to norway when he was just over 1 yrs old), and other…See More
