The arrow of time is globally derived from the global increase of entropy. In an information theory sense as a system evolves in time it becomes more random, the system can be in more possible configurations otherwise known as states. Likewise from the second law of thermodynamics a closed system cannot be reversed. It cannot evolve backwards in time to its initial conditions. However irreversibly of a system is ambiguous in the sense that if enough information is known and enough computational power is available then an observer can reverse the system close to its initial conditions but not precisely.

The increase of randomness in a system over time is deterministic but tends towards chaos in the sense that the error associated with calculating the initial conditions increases exponentially. So as the arrow of time marches forward it becomes exponentially difficult to calculate the initial conditions of any closed system to the point where it is fundamentally impossible due to a physical computational limit. Therefore, if this fundamental computational limit lies on a closed timelike curve there wouldn't be sufficient enough information to determine causality and thus can said to be preserved.

In an analogy consider an observer with an infinite amount of memory and records its entire journey. The CTC is so large that eventually its memory starts to decay and break down, conserving information but scrambling it. When it returns to its initial position it would have retained nothing from its journey.

If you were to construct a time machine that sustains a traversable wormhole the second you enter it your mind would be wiped clean, a the most perfect and complete case of amnesia. So, if your intentions were to kill your grandfather before you traveled back in time it would be impossible to regain those intentions after you traveled back in time.

sweet time travel

love it!

I am not sold on the idea, yet. Even if you dont remember anything you still have the possibility do kill your grandfather (even if not on purpose) so the paradox should still exist.

hmm, you could do any number of things that would effect the timeline as far as I understand, but maybe I'm missing the point.

Hm.. yea. That exactly what I wanted to imply :o

I've heard allot and read a bit on time travel the best explanation i've found so far is on Art Bell's coast to coast. It answered almost all questions i had about what time travel would be like and what kind of machine would be needed. It's only a closed loop time machine but the results they get from it are very interesting.

It should be noted, for those who are unfamiliar with Art Bell and Coast-to-Coast-AM, that Bell is a retired late-night {like for all those people who can't sleep at 3am - lol} radio "entertainer" who specializes {or used to anyway} in fringe topics like the paranormal, and conspiracy theories. {Cue X-Files theme music - lol}  He has stated several times that he does not necessarily believe in 1/2 of the shit that he interviewed people about on his show; although many people think that he does because of the way that he presents things.  In other words, it is all about entertainment value and ratings, and he is / was acting.

If you are the kind of person who likes fringe topics and believes that everything important in life is being covered up by either the government or the Illuminati, then you would love the Coast-to-Coast-AM radio show;  but for the rest of us, we would just *facepalm* about 5-10 mins into it most of the time and turn on the television to watch infomercials instead.  lol

"... but for the rest of us, we would just *facepalm* about 5-10 mins into it most of the time..."

Thanks Shiznit, this is EXACTLY what happened xD

And even knowing that i still find it more accurate then what is described above.
Wouldn't it matter more about the guests integrity and not art bells.
As far as this being actual evidence well obviously its not so yeh if that's what you only want then your better of just watching infomercials :D

The analogy I used is a fanciful one it does not represent the actual physics. The matter that makes up the time travelers body also contains information and thus once he goes back in time he will essentially be vaporized into quantized pieces of energy over the horizon of the universe.

i like that more :)
