The Captain's language learning group
I've created this group to combine the international community of I-Power, with its various languages, and to encourage learning for the site. Learning is a part of self development, and communication is half the battle in anything. I've also linked to a site called Livemocha that I'm using to learn French, and which could help others to learn English. It has good lessons and resources, a section for cultural exchange, and the opportunity to talk with native speakers to enhance your skills. We can all utilize this, along with other resources, amongst ourselves as a team effort for increased efficiency; and if you know of any other helpful sites or tools, feel free to share them with us here.

I'll be taking Spanish in college for my English major. It is a very practical second language for me to learn being an American. I'd also like to learn French, Finnish, and possibly even German.

Came across something hyped on YouTube today as the "Pimsleur Approach" which claimed to enable you to learn a foreign language in just 10 days for only $10. Which sounded too good to be true, so I looked for some outside opinions and found mostly negative reviews - not so much for the techniques involved, but mostly for the associated costs. Evidently their $10 offer is a bait & switch scam, and the Pimsleur "business" people are disreputable.
Just thought y'all might want to know to be careful about some of the language program offers out there. ;-)

Hi there everyone :)
I'm currently studying linguistics and would love to help out with any technical enquiries concerning language. I don't claim to have all the answers, and the field itself has a number of theories as to how we use language, but I'm happy to find out what I can to help others grow and learn.
English is my first language, (first language is often referred to as L1, with any other language being designated L2.) I have learnt some German and some Chinese:Mandarine, but my knowledge of these is only rudimentary.
Most cases that I have seen, where individuals have difficulty learning a language, amount to issues understanding the cultural context in which particular words and phrases are used. When this is the case it is very handy to have someone around who has the target language as their L1, as they are generally the most equipped to answer contextual questions. There are other ways of working these things out but nothing beats first-hand experience.
I applaud the formation of this group. :)
