For me meditation is mind-practice.
Just as working out is body-practice.
The goal is to become more conscious about mind-, emotion- and thought activity, and become able to have more control over it. This is also a VERY good practice for self-development because one learns to control emotions and thoughts which influence our behavior. (maybe even one of the best practices out there)
There are lot of different techniques to improve mindcontrol. Some of them, sadly, have a religious attitude because meditation was firstly discovered in "religious/spiritual" traditions. But that doesn't mean anything. Everyone can practice contemplative practices no matter what ones mindset is.
This group does not have any discussions yet.

Comment by Arjuna aka sdsad on January 28, 2012 at 6:44pm Don't go with TM, all the scientific evidence is not because they have this very "special" mantra which is so magic and powerful, no it's because it's a two times a day contemplative practice for 20 minutes.
NEVER EVER PAY for a meditation techniques.
"Gurus" who want money for their deeds are no real gurus.
A real guru loves you so much he will give you ALL for free when the time is right!!!
On www.aypsite.org you'll find VERY efficient meditation techniques(which are A LOT more powerful than the TM mantras) all for free.
Also there is www.kriyayoga.com but this site is only for those who strive for complete god-union within this incarnation.
If you want to do meditation for stress-reduction, more focus and concentration and better health you can also go with the simple SOOO-HAMM meditation by which you mentally chant SOOOO while inhalation and HAMMMM during exhalation. You mind will wander off, don't worry, just gently bring it back to focus on SOOO-HAMMM

Oh wow, how interesting. Your situation seems to be exactly the same as was Thomas Campbell's some many years ago. It is described in the first part of his book "My Big TOE" which I just happened to read recently.
