INTRODUCTORY NOTE

Athene puts the whole Self Development challenge in the context of neuroscience, and I think this is very helpful. So I want to call this group "Study Your Neurons".

"Rationality and emotional resilience are neural connections that can be strengthened. Specific neurons and neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine trigger a defensive state when we feel that our thoughts have to be protected from the influence of others. ... In a defensive state the more primitive part of the brain interferes with rational thinking."

It is pain that causes the defensive state.

However he also seems to think that correcting this defensive state is very easy, or somehow automatic. That, I submit, is not true for most people.

Across cultures and history, humans have devised a myriad of healthy and unhealthy devices to deal with pain. Violence, drugs, and other forms of sedation are the most common. Gautama Buddha used the only really healthy way to get rid of pain: to stay fully awake and trace the pain back to its actual source; but his method is rare.

So I propose that this group explore self-observing and the obstacles to it.

"The trouble is that the left hemisphere’s far simpler world is self-consistent, because all the complexity has been sheared off – and this makes the left hemisphere prone to believe it knows everything, when it absolutely does not: it remains ignorant of all that is most important." -- Lain McGilchrist

Last night it hit me. "If you frame all behavioral matters as neuronal issues, that changes everything. It is a true paradigm shift. You don't do psychotherapy; you do neuron therapy." The message to IPower partiicipants is, "HEY! You have damaged neurons. (Everybody has damaged neurons.) So, go fix them." Cuz we know how to do that. To repair neurons, you just shut up and pay attention to them. Gautama got that 2,500 years ago (but his system had huge inefficienies.) Human beings haven't gotten it so much because they have been overwhelmed by trying to survive.

So the IPower battle cry could be: "Just shut up and fix your neurons!" (Then talk to me.)

When I visited St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, I walked in through that huge main door and looked up and around, and inside me a voice went, "Whoa! I feel so good. This is much better than Prozac." Then I looked around some more and noticed that this remarkable tranquillizer is owned and operated by the Pope. So, I wouldn't want to get addicted to it.

Here is another really good self-awareness training system:

"Interesting points. I just want to clarify that I didn't mean that society gets all the blame in these scenarios. In my opinion, in some of these cases, there is a shared blame. Maybe referring to society as a whole was too much of a…"
