Scientific Research & Self-Development Activism
The idea of transferring human consciousness into a computer in the future is like the "holy grail" of Transhumanism, because it would, in essence, enable us to become immortal and to "live" forever... but is it even possible? Although we are not scientifically able {yet} to define exactly what consciousness is, we are fairly certain that it consists, {mostly,} of energy patterns, and that it is largely dependent upon our physical bodies for its sustenance - both as its source of energy, and for its sensory input. I know, for example, that my consciousness exists in my body; or, to be more accurate, in my brain. It does not exist, {or "I" do not exist,} on the other side of the room. And if my body were to stop producing electrical energy, my consciousness would cease to exist. Much like a computer - when you turn the power switch off, it dies. And try to imagine, too, what it would be like to exist without your 5 senses. Of course we know that people can live without some of their senses... but what if you had none? How could you be "aware" of your environment? And even if it were still possible to be self-aware w/o any sensory input... what would it be like to be unaware of where you existed in space & time? A freaky concept, right?
.
So anyway, as you can see, there are several problems with the idea of transferring a human being's consciousness into a machine. Dr. Michio Kaku thinks that such a thing may perhaps be possible, some day, but that we are still a long way from being able to do it in any practical sense; and that even if we could, there are still several quandaries involved with the idea itself. :-)

I'll experience this when I'm dead. No but seriously. =)
