YouTube is Dead

UPDATE: Shortly after the release of this article and our already very popular video on the subject, YouTube has put its 'Most Viewed' back as default Videos page. We're cautiously optimistic but it seems that YouTube IS listening to its community. Let's hope they stick to keeping YouTube a powerful platform for a free and open exchange of ideas. Spread the word, Digg it, Reddit it, make videos, let YouTube realize that we love them because of the platform they've always given to its community.

12/06/08 (updated) Two days ago YouTube replaced its list of 'Most Viewed' videos on the site's 'Videos' section with a varied selection of sponsor-friendly videos that the site called 'Most Popular'. Where users normally see videos with high view-counts that have become popular due to viral spreading and community activity, we now saw videos like the new MacBook commercial that gets showcased on the 'Most Popular' #1 spot while having very low view-counts and even lower ratings. YouTube would no longer give massive exposure to its community's video productions and instead had begun tightly controlling its Videos pages to attract more sponsors and a more mainstream audience. However, hundreds of thousands of users responded and YouTube listened...

The consequences would have been drastic, YouTube's 'Videos' front page used to give its community so much exposure that it allowed the instant birth of global grassroots movements such as Anonymous and that it was even a deciding factor in the 2008 US presidential elections as it was constantly being flooded by Obama speeches and fan videos. After the massive outcry from YouTube users, they quickly switched back to the old system, giving a default view on what's being made popular by the site's visitors. It would have been a great loss for (what then used to be) Internet celebrities, online communities and activists around the globe who find YouTube to be the only platform for such massive exposure at no cost but of their own creativity. And since this is the very essence of what made YouTube popular to begin with, such a change could have very well marked the beginning of the end for the video-streaming giant. It's great to see that YouTube still cares deeply for its community and will go out of its way to give it the exposure it deserves.

Show YouTube some love for reacting quickly to the community's outcry, digg it!

Do you want popular videos by the youtube community or do you want stupid popular sites to be able to propel their videos to the top list by a sheer number of views. Ratings, favorites and comments should be taken into account. It's fucking google, they know a thing or two about making google algorithms.

This is, what, the 3rd or 4th major issue this community has run into with YouTube?

If you ask me, the solution is to select a different online video provider (and try to get as many people on board as possible)...

Or start your own ^_^

Imagine waking up one day and seeing all your videos being deleted. Imagine making comments debating issues with no responds, No more expressing opinions about conflicting issues that help people make it threw the day. I guess the subside hot line will be having a lot more calls coming in now that the amazing atheist Thunderfoot and A lot of great other names will not be able to be there for there fellow atheist when they need them. Dave not a atheist. I don't always agree with atheist's and Evolutionists but if we can get along and have debates and disagree issues like adults we should be aloud to do so most people can't put there difference's aside and just talk we do so on youtube and to tell people they don't have a right to speak there mind. Would not only be a Violation of the Constitution and rights. whats more important the us Constitution and rights or a few cry baby people who don't want there kids to see things they shouldn't be aloud to see anyways there's a reason some videos are marked 18 and if there parents allow them to get on youtube than its a issues with the parents not with Youtubes users punishing people for someones lack of parenting is a outrage. So youtube/google you chose what is more important Rights of people? or making a few parents who are doing a bad job at parenting happy. Make your choice.

The Most Viewed section has been a joke for a long time as various people have abuse it by gaming the view counter. To place such a level of importance on it this, saying YouTube is dead, conjures up the dramatic hamster video in my mind's eye.

You're kidding yourself, it didn't go away it just wasn't the default. And I (no doubt one of the few) feel it shouldn't be. If it was a user setting, I certainly would have 'best rated' as that's not as easily gamed.

Frankly why aren't you railing on the comments section? It's the WEAKEST aspect of YouTube these days, it's so last century and deserves a full reset.

The power of testing
They tested it, didn't work out and changed back

Can't see a flaw in this myself

I have always wondered when You tube would start focussing more on it's income generating potential

Due to the massive amounts of fake accounts and spambots out there, some of the dumbest shit was getting featured because of fake ratings. I believe Youtube chose the better of two evils.

I very rarely click on the videos on the front page of You Tube but search for what I want, such as "Ummagumma" or "Tang Dynasty" and have downloaded quite a collection.

Anyway, I'm rather surprised with the assumption Internet users have about their own empowerment when the owner, who's invested in their site have the total say over what they want to do with their property and we are just lodgers or guests in a hotel and unpaying guests to boot.

If we want our say, we form a club and pay dues towards funding the website, webserver and for its maintenance.

If we want to freeload, then we have to accept that our host has the final say.

You Tube's owner is a company and like all capitalists, they want to make a profit from it and they may offer it for free to attract traffic but when they have enough, which You Tube does, they will move to the next step and focus on the most revenue-providing content and this comes as no surprise and it will happen with all commercial sites, so let's not entertain any illusions.

At the end of the day, it will be like rock bands. When they are new and have a cult following, they will be at their most creative but once they become big, their music usually become commercial and they become millionaires, while we struggling fans lament the change.

Of course, new bands will emerge which are creative but they usually will go down the same road if they get big, just as a baby will grow up to adulthood and then gradualy age until it's an old and grey person and then dies and ends up in the tomb.

I've really lost interest in the I Power crew since seeing so many videos that seemed to be just ads for Obama. I appreciate them having their own political views, but just felt more like that kind of energy was better spent on helping promote Net Neutrality, than supporting Barack Obama.

Yes, it is true that you can just click the most viewed tab to see the videos which are actually the most popular. In addition to what Dean said, there seems to be another important concept that people are missing.

Since a user's home page defaults to the featured videos, these will obviously receive A LOT more views than they normally would. Consequently, they will actually MOVE UP into the most viewed section, taking the place of videos which are not sponsored.

In other words, the most viewed section is a complete joke. Both the "most popular" and "most viewed" sections will be filled with YouTube's featured crap. Thanks a lot YouTube, you are officially screwing everyone over...

I've never used "Most Viewed" or "Most Popular" or anything from that page. Every YouTube video I've ever seen, I've either searched for, or been linked to (or embedded in) from another site. I'm pretty sure this is the case for the majority of users.

Most viewed was constantly being messed with before this, it's only going yo get worse now (if we go with the flow).

Youtube now shows the total views on a video instead of the daily views, that way it's much harder to catch them out - but certain Google labs tools can show it very clearly.

You guys really think the previously "most popular" videos will show up in most viewed? I personally noticed recently that many of my "most popular videos" are no longer on youtube. Stuff that shouldn't have been removed for infringement or censorship purposes either. The content that I used to watch regularly in the past is diminishing, and I'm beginning to suspect that youtube's new policy is the cause of this.

youtube is becoming this big evil giant for quite some time now. and it's all about the money.

I never used the most viewed section anyway. Youtube led the way, there are plenty of video sites proppin up all over the place. Support em, like, when is the alternative to facebook gonna spring up? Those people got a nerve!!

YouTube is dead, but the Internet don't!
We are the internet, not what YouTube wants to show us. I think YouTube will go down and we are going to prevail. It's a matter of time.

What is happening here is the tradicional media entering in the internet. This is the shit, and everybody knew it would just happen someday..

The question here is: How these big corporations will go against the new flow? They are very very fucked.

We are not. The solution for us is to find another site which respects net neutrality and that's it.

(But stays the question: Will Google respect this site in their services?)

Has anyone honestly ever clicked on any video from the Most Watched, even when they were on the first page? I mean I see the only reason to do so is when you are bored to death.
Comment by Pablo on December 5, 2008 at 8:42pm
well it's sad, but their a business company, they are not a grassroot movement, they are not a comunity work, they are simply a big company who want to make money showing and hosting people's videos.

I don't think that the barack obama boom on youtube, was something made without some help from the youtube staff and I dont think that if ralph nader or any other candidate who was truly against big companys control over the media and politics would have had the same help that barack had from youtube and google.

by the way, i like the phillip defranco show :P

Another thing, to the guy in the sun glasses and handkerchief on his face. The goofy hat, sun glasses, and handkerchief on your face discredits you.
