It occurred to me recently whilst trying to break some of my bad behaviors that perhaps this "addictive personality" that my family and friends tell me I am prone to is nothing more than just that: words spoken to me by others. The idea that my genes are more prone to addictive behaviors makes me think in the practical sense.
