Scientific Research & Self-Development Activism
Last sunday i made a post on the forum that i was going to start teacing myself, since i didn`t get into the school i wanted. So i`m doing this kind of to see how well i can learn outside of the system of education. And i think it is a good idea to write about it on i-power. If anybody is interested in this kind of thing they will have something to read, and i get yet another opportunity to practice my english, so it`s win-win.
The way i worked this first week was that i set myself two goals. This is no huge amount, but it kept me from getting overwhelmed this first time. One goal was work-related, the other was math-related.
The work-goal was eggs. I wrote down a bunch of questions i had about eggs and then found the answers. I found this most interesting since i had to think not only about the answers to the questions, but also which questions i wanted answers to.
For the math-related goal i decided to complete a chapter in a math-book i bought earlier this year (the same book they use in the school i wished to enter). I felt i skipped a part of the process since i there can just follow the book from start to the beginning.
I found out it was very easy to motivate myself to study when i had a day-off from work. It actually felt like a relief to do something else than playing gaimz half the day.
I also checked out Khan academy. Thanks to michael i now know the difference between compound- and simple interest.
Comment by SparTom007 - Tom on July 21, 2012 at 5:06am Gotta be honest, although I've never found anything wrong with khan academy, I can't stand it :P I'd stick with textbooks then go on youtube and look for video tutorials for things you don't understand :)
I'm pretty decent at maths (did maths and further (advanced) maths at college so know more than average person pre university level :)

Comment by Bart on July 21, 2012 at 6:17pm @Tom - i might take you up on that when i reach the inevitable wall of unsolvable equations.
Next week i`m going on vacation to Poland with my gf, so i`m making it a goal to learn some polish since i`ll be away from my computer and books anyway. Even though japanese sounds much more exciting.
Comment by Nathan Davies on July 21, 2012 at 6:34pm Also see MIT OpenCourseware and Berkeley's free classroom stuff. Good shit, also free.
Comment by SparTom007 - Tom on July 22, 2012 at 4:36am @Bart Don't expect too much straight away, not done much maths in nearly 2 years xD I'd have to give myself a lil recap first but once it's learned, it's quite easy to remind yourself of things in maths :D
Also check coursera out :)
