A letter from my congressman concerning the Patriot Act.

Dear Dylan:

Thank you for contacting me about the USA PATRIOT Act. I appreciate hearing from you.

Shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Congress enacted the USA PATRIOT Act in an effort to enhance our nation's investigative tools and prevent future terrorist activities. In the 109th Congress, I supported the reauthorization of the PATRIOT Act (P. L. 109-177) which was signed into law on March 9, 2006.

The PATRIOT Act has been an important tool in our fight against terrorism. The Act has enhanced the federal government's capacity to share intelligence, strengthen criminal laws against terrorism, removed obstacles to investigating terrorism, and updated the law to reflect new technology. I believe the PATRIOT Act has been instrumental in protecting America from terrorist acts and has helped us prosecute terrorists and stop the flow of funds to terrorists and terrorist organizations. Our efforts against terrorism will be fought here at home in addition to overseas. It is crucial that our law enforcement agencies have the tools necessary to combat and thwart those who would harm us on our own soil.

Several provisions of the PATRIOT Act are scheduled to expire on December 31, 2009, including two provisions that expanded the scope of federal intelligence-gathering authority following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. While these provisions will sunset on December 31, grandfather clauses permit them to remain effective with respect to investigations that began or potential offenses that took place, before the sunset date. Several bills have been introduced in the 111th Congress to extend the expiring provisions.

Please know that I will be following this issue closely, and I will keep your concerns in mind as Congress considers national security issues. Again, thank you for contacting me. Feel free to contact me again on matters of concern to you.

Best Regards,

Steve Buyer

I do think it is good but it needs to be watched the truth is we have no constitutional right of privacy. As long as there are no limits on what we can say,, I mean no one is regulating only listening right?? So yeah I guess it’s a gray line and I find myself in the middle but if it was my call today I would support it.

lol yeah V quote right?? CirconG
