Scientific Research & Self-Development Activism
I`ve been doing this self-teaching project of mine since the end of july. Recently i found a cheap private school and i`m taking it. I have to take four different exams to be able to get into university.
So next week i`ll get back into the education system and read state-approved books. But there are some sides about this school i like. There are no tests during the year, the only standing grade you get is the exam. It`s only four different courses, three hours each every week, so i won`t get overloaded. And it`s (relatively) cheap, i can afford it without much fuzzing about, looking for money.
After the weeks of self-teaching. I think speed-reading was the most valuable thing i learned, and i will continue with training my reading speed.
But for the title, i will still have to teach myself, can`t trust too much in these state-approved books and teachers.
Comment by Lore on August 30, 2012 at 3:15am I'm glad you found a school you like. I also admire your efforts to teach yourself as that seems to be extremely rare and I've even noticed people actually look down on it. As if their formal education makes them intellectually superior to those who taught themselves.
Comment by Bart on August 30, 2012 at 6:53am it`s weird, because i was taught in school that being independent and showing initiative was a good thing. But it feels like it`s socially unacceptable to debate some subjects if you don`t got some degree to show.
Comment by SparTom007 - Tom on August 30, 2012 at 3:37pm I completely understand Bart, when I tell people I know certain things they automatically assume BS cos I don't have a fancy degree from some university :(
My gf sometimes pisses me off when I say something she doesn't know she says I just saw it on the internet so it's automatically wrong, even when I tell her I read it in a peer review study posted on a university website...
Comment by Merity Z on September 2, 2012 at 11:51pm A lot of independent study websites are gaining fair credibility. Most notably being Khan academy who receives a lot of funding from the gates foundation and whose founder, Salman Khan has been invited to speak at places like MIT, Rice, PBS, CNN, Colbert, and TED. MIT also does a lot of open course ware, and youtube is full of videos on everything from neuroscience to introductory biology.
Maybe my generation in america is so adverse to education in general, even what is considered a "lesser" form of enthusiasm is still encouraged.
