Hey everyone!

I have just one semester left in high school and i dont have any idea of what do i want to study... i feel really pressed.

¿What if i picked the wrong carrer for me and i end up dropping and just lost my time and my parent's money, or if i dont drop and i end up unhappy with my life for this?.

So it cames to my mind to take a "sabbatical" year so i have time to clear my mind before this big decision.

The plan if i take a sabbatical year is to find a job, try living out of poker and there is the possibility to open a bar along my brother and a friend, so i could realize:

  • What kind of jobs i can apply for if i dont study.
  • How far can i get playing poker.
  • If the bar runs well it could give some money as economic support.
  • And with all this i could analize what is what i like and what i not and what is what i really wanna do with my life.

I'd like to know what do you think about all this.

¿Did you take a sabbatical year? ¿Are you happy with what you are studying? ¿How did you choose your carrer? ¿Did you always have in mind to study that? ¿Any advice you want to give me?

Sorry for my bad english, hope you understood.

Thanks for reading.

With poker you'd have to be really committed, it's possible, even along a study...
But you'd have to be very dedicated and put a lot of time in it.
Do you have any experience?

I've switched between... well
- Half a year I went and tried a higher , high school education. (Weird system just think of it as, with one I can go to college (OK, very good) and the other let's me join University (Great ofc).
Quit that
- Went and studied Commercial Economics/Marketing, not my thing... I don't like fucking people with misleading advertisements, kissing ass for bonusses etc.
- Now I'm studying Game Development (Software Engineering with 3 more subjects... so isn't like you're getting ready for the gaming world u just learn some skills etc.)

I'm fairly happy, I sometimes like what I study but I'm thinking about switching (AGAIN) to another game development study where it's more focussed on gaming and art rather than just another study with 3 extra subjects... I just prefer the informal world more, and it seems to be less about money as for when you study software engineering or commercial economics where they all tell you "You need funds" "You need to sell" "Companies will hire you for$$$$$$$" since I hate that blegh.

I think it's more up to you to where you think you belong...
What kind of person you are, what kind of environment you prefer, do you see yourself punching numbers all day at an audit firm, or writing code for new software package for Microsoft?

I can't tell you much since I still have no clue where I'll end up, but I do know I've tried and now know that some things were really just not right for me...
It's not wasting when you still learn something out of it.

But I understand your concern about time and money.

I just don't know how to fix that myself either, I tried poker but Tax system sucks here to it was impossibel for me to do so.

My parents forced me to go to college. I got depressed when I was about to move close to my school. My 3 year college turned into a 3 year depression. So I sat at home for two years. 1,5 years ago I got a job as museum and shop clerk. I love my job. I like talking to people and when they aren't here, I can work on my computer. I'm never bored.

I love cartoon animating and I'm getting better at it on my own.

No need for school if you can hold your own spoon. (a joke)

My advice is that if you take a sabbatical year, you better stay active every day in trying to find out what you want to do with your life. Make sure that you continue to be productive in all your actions. If you do decide to go to college after taking a year off from school, it will be extremly difficult to get back into the habit of studying and going to class.
