Jesse Schell - When Games Invade Real Life

Carnegie Mellon University Professor and game designer, Jesse Schell, dives into the world of game development which is emerging from the "Facebook Games" era; and at the 2010 DICE Summit, he makes a startling prediction: a future where Experience Points & Leveling-Up break "out of the box" and into EVERY part of our daily lives.

20 minutes later as he starts talking about the future I start to think... this guy is really crazy....

they are pretty clever... these game developers... they play with peoples psychology and mind, so that they can make mad amount of cash. From mindless entertainment. Even I am hooked to one game like LoL. I avoid games for this reason... "See no evil, do no evil."

its seems the little things or things of less significance mean more to people then things on a bigger scale, like a global crisis :O

@Maikel - aaaahhh, I see.  Well, I'm a "Believer"... in the Singularity, that is.  As well as Transhumanism.  I'm subscribed to 4 different Facebook Groups that keep me updated on stuff related to those subjects; and I'm even kinda known for it around here, because I've started a few threads about it.  One member here called me, "the A.I. Guy".  :-)

Here are a couple of those threads I started:

Overall, my opinion is that the very near future is both exciting and terrifying at the same time; and I don't think anyone has to go as far as Aaron Franz does and start linking occult symbolism and conspiracy theories into it in order to generate even more fear.  His main proposal is that technology will be used by a group of wealthy elites in order to enslave and dominate the masses; but Fuck!  that is already going on, and has been for a long time.  It's nothing new.  :-)

@Maikel - the "documentary" you linked, The Age of Transitions, goes way beyond the scope of what Jesse Schell was talking about with regards to gaming and crosses into the topics of the Singularity event and H+/Transhumanism; and the guy who produced that documentary, Aaron Franz, is a bit of a conspiracy proponent, believing that an elite intelligentsia is going to try to bring us all under a form of digitized mind-control, etc.  He's not as crazy as some others out there that I've heard though, like Alex Jones; and much of what he presents will admittedly be possible in the future, but not probable.

Truth be told, the reality of the situation is perhaps even more scary than anything that any of us could imagine right now, because the nature of the Singularity is that it is unpredictable.  :-)

"Well I AM essentially talking about opinion.  Because really - that is all there is. Even if everyone on the earth agrees on something does that make it a fact or does that just mean they share the same opinion?"

"Yes I agree open-mindedness is of paramount importance. Even if you think you know all there is to know about something it pays to stay open minded about the possibility of new information on that subject coming to light."

Being right

In a sense I want to blow up the words “right” and “wrong”.  I want to banish them from my vocabulary.More specifically I do not ever wish to BE right. And I do not ever want to say to someone else “you are WRONG”. What is the purpose of being or proving oneself to be, right? And what is the purpose of proving someone else is wrong?Apart from some sort of ego based sense of satisfaction what is the purpose of these things? Can anyone give me an answer to this question? If someone says something…See More
