A look at some of the flawed thinking that prompts people who believe in certain non-scientific concepts to advise others who don't to be more open-minded. m...

Vlad- the point of the video is not to say there are no supernatural happenstances, but to merely explain what open mindedness and close mindedness really are. Just cause uncertainty cant be explained doesn't mean it is not true either, that is a fools bet, BUT you should never push something that CANT be explained on someone else, and just assume your right because it makes sense to you.

This is so true :) I agree on this definition!

I would like to explore this a bit further.  Critical thinking is good and has value but I think what is needed more these days is thinking patterns that involve design and creativity.  Sure, we can criticize this mans stupid neighbor for his faults in logic, but what of designing a better way forward.  Surely there is something that will help Qualia and his neighbor have a constructive conversation that promotes an expansion of knowledge and perception, or a sharing there of.  The approach here seems to lock both Qualia and his neighbor in a sort of win loose battle, does this battle create good results?  So, a solution, in my mind, would be to explore the many possibilities for the lamp shade shacking, even if the real reason was found, it would be a good exercise  explorative thinking rather than argumentative thinking.

This is a really good video and it got me thinking. But is it really wrong to assume supernaturality? For example, I believe as it is right now, it is very possible the there is a supernatural force. I'm going to keep on topic here. But the fact that I believe it is supernatural doesn't make me closed minded. I'm not going to wait a long time until evidence shows up, and I'm going to use currently-found logic, and understanding to decide whether or not to believe in the supernatural. For example, scientists say that much of Darwin's theories, although the basis for it, actually contradict modern evolutionary studies. If one still assumes that all of Darwin's theories are correct, then that is closed mindedness. But suppose modern science has not found contradicting evidence, do we then just dismiss Darwin's theories until it does? Of course not. Anyways, that's all I have for it for now..

Why does there always half to be a reason for everything anyway? Cant we just say "It is what it is". Interesting video tho, raises some awareness. Overall I say open mindedness is being able to see the possibilities of all possibilities, no matter what you believe, others believe or what we claim to be a fact. Everything is our perception of reality, we dont know if this is reality, we are human beings, what about animals, they might have a different perception of reality, now that would be conflicting realities which could not be the case. We are a single part of creation viewing the world in a certain way from how we percieve it, therefor there are no right and wrong, everything is a matter of perception and opinion. The closest you'll ever be to the truth is with this simple statement, It is what it is.

I like the video and agree with Qualia's description of what being open minded means.  However there are clear biases in this video that I think will block true understanding and communication between differing minded people.

Good video. However, I feel that it's best to be more on the lenient side when it comes to requiring factual evidence. Almost all things exist somewhere on a spectrum. Rather than determining "this is true" and "this is false" I believe it is best to say "this much is true, this much is uncertain, and this much is highly unlikely."

"Well I AM essentially talking about opinion.  Because really - that is all there is. Even if everyone on the earth agrees on something does that make it a fact or does that just mean they share the same opinion?"

"Yes I agree open-mindedness is of paramount importance. Even if you think you know all there is to know about something it pays to stay open minded about the possibility of new information on that subject coming to light."

Being right

In a sense I want to blow up the words “right” and “wrong”.  I want to banish them from my vocabulary.More specifically I do not ever wish to BE right. And I do not ever want to say to someone else “you are WRONG”. What is the purpose of being or proving oneself to be, right? And what is the purpose of proving someone else is wrong?Apart from some sort of ego based sense of satisfaction what is the purpose of these things? Can anyone give me an answer to this question? If someone says something…See More
